Why should I enroll my child in music lessons?

If your child has an interest and/or talent in music, it is imperative to get him/her training as soon as possible. Music is like learning a language; the earlier in life it is learned the easier it is and the more native it will become. There is no magic age to start your child; every child is different. Mozart, for instance, was composing and performing in public by the age of 6 years old. As long as the child has an interest, he/she can begin to learn an instrument.

Beyond offering your child the opportunity to explore his/her interests, which may become a career, there are many other benefits to a music education, such as improving applications; obtaining scholarships into schools, colleges, or summer programs; improving self-esteem; and last but certainly not least, improve your child's emotional and cognitive levels. In addition to being a proven stress-reliever, music is also shown to improve cognitive functioning across all subjects, especially math and science.

We offer preparation for ABRSM exams that may be used for school credit upon approval.

It is imperative to make sure you find the right training from a knowledgeable teacher. Just because he/she is young and a beginner does not mean just any teacher will be fine for now. Bad habits can be made that can ruin their chances or worse, damage them physically and preventing future study. Similarly, if the teacher is knowledgeable but does not make studying enjoyable, it can ruin the child's relationship with music. Finding a knowledgeable teacher who makes learning fun for your child is the best thing you can do!

Where should I start?

A good place to start is by scheduling a complimentary consultation. During the consultation we can discuss your child's interests and your goals for him/her for lessons. From there we can gauge if he/she would be best suited for our Little Notes program or for private study of one or multiple instruments.

Voice Lessons for Children & Teenagers

Voice lessons are available for beginners to advanced singers in all styles. All our voice instructors have a classical voice foundation so you can trust you are getting knowledgable vocal advise across any genre, including Classical Voice, Musical Theater, Pop, Jazz, & others.

Teachers and directors must be careful with young voices as their vocal chords aren't as developed as an adult's chords; children's muscles are not fully developed and they are not as large or flexible. Their resonating cavities and lungs are also smaller. Teaching children the right kind of technique and at the right level is extremely important for the future health of the young singer. While classical technique should be learned only when the vocal chords have properly matured, young singers should begin as soon as possible to learn good, healthy habits to preserve the voice, prevent injury, and prepare for classical training in the future. It is also a good age to begin developing musicality and interpretation. Vocal maturation often begins between 13 and 15 for young girls, usually later for boys.

Dangerous Practices in a Child’s Voice:

1. Any kind of belting, especially with a forward thrusting jaw.

2. High larynx singing, or forcing a child-like sound on a maturing voice.

3. Depressed larynx singing, or forcing an adult sound on a child's voice. This often occurs while imitating pop or rock singers that are adults.

4. Loud, pushed singing.

5. Lack of open pharyngeal space, which protects the vocal folds.

Our young students are very involved in performing in Washington, DC. We are proud to teach members Washington National Opera's Children's Chorus, Washington National Children's Choir, the Washington National Opera's Opera Institute, and numerous leads in school and local musicals.

Piano Lessons for Children & Teenagers

Piano is a great instrument for kids, but it can be taxing on their fingers and hands if not learned correctly. Arthritis and joint problems are common results of improper techniques. We often get questions about a child's hand size in relation to the large keyboard. We have never seen this be a problem. Mastering reading music, rhythm, and just the first octave in both hands can take a long time. If we see there is an issue occurring due to hand size, we may recommend simply obtaining a smaller electric keyboard, such as the Casio 44-key portable keyboard where the keys are about half the width of a normal keyboard.

Guitar Lessons for Children & Teenagers

Guitar is a very popular instrument for kids ant teenagers. Getting to the point of actually making music can be faster on the guitar than on other instruments. It also offers the basis in an instrument that has much of the songwriting over the past decades written for it, so the repertoire is easily accessible. Like with the piano, we often get questions about a child's hand size in relation to the guitar. This is not an issue as there are many guitar companies that make smaller guitars for smaller hands and kids. It is also absolutely fine to begin learning with a Ukulele  Hand size will not be an issue with a properly sized instrument. You might consider renting these instruments if you are concerned your child may quickly out-grow the guitar sizes.

Theory, Composition, & Songwriting for Children & Teenagers

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of basic music theory in your child's music education. Some theory will be learned in private instrument study, but to expand on that knowledge requires a separate class. If your child has an interest in understanding the "why" behind music, this will help answer his/her questions. Having a deeper understanding of music will have a tremendous and positive impact of instrument study. If your child enjoys composing his/her own music, this is a great option as well. Many students don't realize the science that is going on behind the music. Without this knowledge, it can be difficult to take composing to the next level. Additionally, if your child would like to begin distributing, submitting  or producing compositions  knowledge of different computer notation, editing, production, and composition programs will be needed. We offer everything from pen & paper theory to on-instrument instruction to computer music composition in all genres.

Theoretical studies suggested after beginner proficiency is obtained in any one instrument.
