Acclaimed as an “exemplary” and “moving” musician (Minneapolis Star Tribune) and an “inspired” and “captivating” artistic programmer (St. Paul Pioneer Press), conductor, lyric baritone, pianist, and arranger Matthew Goinz enjoys an active, cross-county musical career, joyfully exploring the programmatic, narrative, and theatrical fringes of the modern vocal ensemble.

For four years, Matthew was a member of the celebrated vocal chamber ensemble Cantus, with whom he toured nationally and internationally and served as Tour Manager. He has appeared in performance at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Minnesota Public Radio, The Greene Space (New York Public Radio), The Barns at Wolf Trap, Duke Performances, the Krannert Center, Teatro Metropolitano in Medellín, Colombia, the Daegu and Busan Choral Festivals, the National Theater and Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan, Tianjin Concert Hall, and Shenzhen Concert Hall. He has also been heard on local and national media outlets in programs with Minnesota Public Radio, American Public Media, WQXR (NYC), WCRB (Boston), Colorado Public Radio, and Texas Public Radio.

A champion of new music, Matthew has commissioned and premiered works by Libby Larsen, Gabriel Kahane, David Lang, Jeff Beal, Dale Warland, Roger Treece, Ysaye Barnwell, Joseph Gregorio, Stephen Caracciolo, Nell Shaw Cohen, Rosephanye Powell, and Gerald Near, and has enjoyed innovative collaborations with numerous arts organizations including The Guthrie Theater, Chanticleer, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Eric Whitacre and the Eric Whitacre Singers, and Taipei Male Choir.

Matthew continues active performance relationships with Grammy-nominated ensembles Skylark and True Concord Voices & Orchestra, as well as the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, the Cathedral Choir at Washington National Cathedral, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He can be heard on a number of critically acclaimed albums, including True Concord’s 2016 Grammy-nominated “Far In The Heavens: Choral Music of Stephen Paulus”, on which he served as production manager, soloist, and ensemble member.

Hailing from northern Minnesota, Matthew studied conducting, voice, piano, and theater at Concordia College, Bemidji State University, and the University of Arizona. He is currently pursuing his DMA in Choral Conducting at the University of Maryland where he conducts and sings with several ensembles and serves as Chorusmaster for the Maryland Opera Studio. He makes his home in the Washington, DC area.
