Biography
Thomas is a voice teacher, vocal coach, and piano teacher based in the Washington D.C area. He is currently a pianist and coach in Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program and is part of the music staff for Washington National Opera’s April 2019 production of Tosca. Thomas has worked as a staff pianist and vocal coach at the Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University, the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop and the Castleton Festival.
He has many years of experience working with singers and pianists of all levels in a wide variety of repertoire, and currently maintains a coaching studio in the DC area. Thomas was an apprentice coach at the Merola Opera Program in the summer of 2018. He also has spent three summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School.
Thomas received his master's degree in collaborative piano from Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Warren Jones. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where he studied piano as well as composition. As part of this degree, he spent a semester in Vienna, Austria, where he studied German language, opera and Lieder.
Thomas has a background primarily in classical voice (opera, art song, and oratorio), but also loves and has experience in and musical theater. He worked in lessons and classes with Renée Fleming, Carol Vaness, James Morris, Stephanie Blythe, Stephen King, Cesar Ulloa, Mignon Dunn, Martin Katz, Warren Jones, Kathleen Kelly, Stephen Blier, Francesca Zambello, Jane Eaglen, Deborah Birnbaum, Neil Shicoff, Laura Brooks Rice, Joan Dornemann, John Churchwell, Diana Soviero, Matthew Rose, Eric Owens, Sheri Greenawald, Mark Morash, and Joan Patenaude-Yarnell, among others.
