Biography

Tissa is an experienced professional who has worked with students of many backgrounds, languages, and skill levels. He has a BA in Jazz Studies from The Florida State University and a Masters in Music from Michigan State University.

After attending Florida State he moved to Washington, where he taught and performed regularly with prominent musicians, and in 2017, he was invited to be a graduate assistant at MSU’s prestigious jazz department, led by Rodney Whitaker. Tissa participates with the Modern Jazz Generation, a collection of many generations of musicians who have all been mentored by the pianist Marcus Roberts. They have performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, annually at Birdland, Symphony Hall in Chicago, and the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. Tissa is also on the faculty at Swing Central, where he serves as a clinician, teaches masterclasses, and is an adjudicator for the competition.
